Dream Achieved

In June 2012, I went to Vancouver, B.C. to speak on Digital Storytelling at the Northern Voice Social Media and Blogging Conference. I gathered quite a bit of multimedia in my basket and put it together as a little “this is my professional development” digital story.

My sister Cheryl R. Long asked me about the same time to speak at her artists retreat on “Digital Storytelling as an Art Form.” I ended up talking about something else, but she had gotten it into my head that I needed to start thinking about how to be more artistic in my digital storytelling. This is my first answer to that question.

WOW! WOW! WOW! (she said like a little dog, tail wagging in excitement). Take me with you next time! Think I’ll be ready by then?
I’m working on playing once I get the working on working down. Almost there. And then, what fun is waiting for me! You are m’pied piper, and your siren song is irreSIStible.

Fun and engaging, what an eye you have. I wanna play!Even though Vancouver is just over the border from me, it seems fresh and enticing seen through your lens. You have me wondering, how could I make a professional development story for my painting students? Talk soon!

      Cheryl,
Actually, I have already been gathering multimedia for just such a project!
You can help by writing a script–what story would you like to tell?
Thanks for inspiring me to think about digital storytelling as an art form!

      Michael,
I am always thrilled to get a thumbs up from a professional photographer, since I am still a beginner. Thanks for your positive thoughts!

I really appreciated the way you started with real material wheels taking off into the sky then landing again in real time and concrete. Then you wove dream, place and people together seamlessly. The beautiful young people dressed up for Prom placed the dream precisely in time and space. A great story! I could say “keep up the great work” but I know you will! Thank you Mickey Brown

    Mickey/Mom,
There is no higher praise than to get concrete feedback from The Mother of us All. That is a good observation, and one I worked hard on, so thank you for noticing!

You are so tweetable and more- it was a pleasure to get to meet you in person at NV12 (thanks for the footage of the dead drop installation).

Your video work rings true to the CDS form and your own writing, speaking, adds a level of poetic ambiance. I like your tapping into the street scene, and your use of visual and video metaphors.

My challenge would be what kind of narrative might you do with the same material as a constructed fiction rather than a personal narrative? It’s not a criticism, but something I’ve been confounded with my last batches of students is their struggle to “make stuff up”.

    your buddy in storytelling,

    Alan

    Alan,
Thanks for tuning in to my humble corner of the internet. Yes, I did this project as the capstone to my Digital Storytelling in the Curriculum course at UC/Denver, where I am one class away from receiving my Certificate in Digital Storytelling. But never fear: DS 106 4 Life!

I love your challenge, as I also write, publish and teach fiction. Let me see what I can do…

Watch your back; here I come!

    Thanks again,
    Sandy
