Meditation on a Gray Day (with Mary Oliver)

“Meditation on a Gray Day” in conversation with poet Mary Oliver who asks, “What will you do with your one wild and precious life?”
It’s been cloudy and cool for the last week when I shot this little film out at Kirk Ponds, which are the extensive network of ponds at the base of Fern Ridge Dam, outside Eugene, Oregon.
For this project, I shot for the first time with a Moment anamorphic lens, and I edited for the first time on LumaFusion, a much more high end editor than I’ve ever used before, so lots of learning went on behind the scenes. Creating this project made me very happy. It made me work all of my different brains—writing, videoing, and editing. I loved having Mary Oliver as my muse for this time apart.

No, we’re not getting any younger, and have no guarantee of how much longer we might have. But I’m thinking that’s okay, enough. FWIW, I think it’s enough that we are ephemeral field flowers, too, rooted in the living meadow, maybe to be plucked early, or grazed — not escaping the traffic of the world, but adding what beauty we can to it.
